Field Trip: Ketona Glades, Bibb County, Alabama

August 17 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Description:  We finish our exploration of the famous Ketona Glades of Bibb Co., Alabama with a visit to see the fall wildflowers.  During our trip last year, we were fortunate to catch some early-blooming Cahaba torch (Liatris oligocephala).  We should see more of this at the end of its bloom period.  In addition to the Cahaba torch, the highlights should be the sticky rosinweed (Silphium glutinosum), Ketona tickseed (Coreopsis grandiflora var. inclinata), Cahaba daisy fleabane (Erigeron dolomiticola), all Ketona Glade endemics.  Other interesting plants that we may encounter include Georgia aster (Symphyotrichum georgianum), slender blazingstar (Liatris cylindracea), Elliott’s fanpetals (Sida elliottii), and blue sage (Salvia azurea var. grandiflora).

Meeting Place/Time:  We will meet at the parking lot at Kathy Stiles Freeland Bibb County Glades Preserve at 10:00 AM Central.

Difficulty:  Moderate.  The rock in the glades outcrops is fairly jagged making walking a bit hazardous.  At this time of year, the heat can be very intense, so bring PLENTY of water!  We will try to take breaks in the shade if necessary.

Facilities:  None.

Lunch:  Bring to eat at the parking lot.

Leader:  Bart Jones, (901-485-2745)
