Field Trip: Balsam Mountain Loop Motor Tour, Swain Co., North Carolina

July 20 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Description:  Cars will leave the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, travel the Blue Ridge Parkway to Heintooga Ridge Road. Pre-determined stops will occur in order to observe selected wildflower species, a lunch break will occur at the Balsam Mountain picnic area which has restroom facilities. Following lunch, those interested will continue down Balsam Mountain Road (a secondary road) where selected stops are also anticipated, ultimately returning to the starting point. Possible species to observe include Platanthera psycodes, Platanthera ciliaris Pilosella caespitosa, Rhododendron, Rumex acetosella, Lilium superbum, Solidago juncea, Amianthium muscitoxicum among others to be determined by scouting prior to the trip.

Meeting Place/Time:  Oconaluftee Visitor Center at 9:00 AM Eastern for a 10:00 AM sharp departure; it is requested that riders “team up” to reduce cars for the trip.

Difficulty:  Easy, except for some uphill areas near pullovers; caution should be maintained due to being near roads with potential traffic.

Facilities:  At the Visitor Center and at the picnic area.

Lunch:  Balsam Mountain picnic area.
