Indian Paintbrush
Castilleja coccinea
An annual or biennial herb that is parasitic on the roots of
grasses. The flowers are tubular and green and extend
beyond the brilliant scarlet bracts that most people recognize
as the "flower". Although this is the only species of Indian
paintbrush found in Tennessee, there are several different
species that can be found in the western US. These plants are
found in moist prairies and barrens in Middle and East
Tennessee starting in May.
