Native Plant of the Month
January, 2011
Creeping Phlox
Phlox stolonifera

This showy perennial forms large colonies of plants due to numerous runners (stolons) that root to form
new plants.  In mid to late April, the colonies become masses of purple-blue and are favorites of butterflies.
This wildflower is found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee and is particularly abundant in the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park.
