Native Plant of the Month
February, 2010
Wallrue
Asplenium ruta-muraria
This small fern goes unnoticed by most as it grows on exposed rock surfaces, typically sheer cliffs and bluffs. The
plant seldom grows past a diameter of 6 inches. The common name is derived from the fact the fronds resemble
the leaves of the genus Thalictrum or rues. This adorable fern can be found most often on the faces of river bluffs
in Middle and East Tennessee.
